Abstract

The electron microscope (EM) represents a research tool for the characterization of materials at the micro- and nanoscale. This paper presents history, working principles and application of transmission EM and scanning EM. These types of EM are compared with the light microscope. Moreover, accurate analogies, simple demonstrations and references to educational materials concerning EM are mentioned.
